Disciple:
St. James the Greater: (Apostle, Martyr)
The patron of Spain and of pilgrims. He is mentioned as the first
of the disciples to go on a missionary journey. The escallop shells
refer to pilgrimage.
Biblical Scene: While they
were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke
it, gave it to the disciples,
and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." Then he took the cup, and after
giving thanks he gave it to them, saying;
"Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26: 26-28)
Cross:
The Calvary Cross: Sometimes called the Graded Cross.
The three steps, from the top down, stand for
Faith, Hope, Love. (The Calvary Cross is also found on the altar.)
